Dear Members,
It is with sadness that I advise members of the passing of VGC Life Member Mrs Gwen Wilson, who passed away earlier this week. Gwen would have turned 94 today, 17th June. Gwen has been a member of VGC since 1955 and was awarded Life Member status of the Club in 2014. She will be sadly missed by VGC members.
Gwen & her husband Jim hold a very special place in the history of VGC. In 1958, Gwen & Jim worked with the club to purchase the freehold land where the main course sits today in their own names as the then owner refused to sell the land to a Golf Club. After purchase, Gwen & Jim then agreed to transfer the title of the land to the Club in return for their purchase price paid. In short, if not for the Wilson’s supporting our Club at that time, our main course may not exist. The Clubs recorded history finishes the piece about Gwen & Jim Wilson with the words “For their part in the venture to secure a sound future for the Club, Jim & Gwen Wilson are owed a debt of gratitude and some form of recognition is warranted”.
Not only was Gwen a good golfer (scoring 2 holes in one at VGC) she was a proud and greatly respected member of VGC and an entirely worthy recipient of Life Member status bestowed in 2014.
A memorial service to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held at The Albany Creek Memorial Park crematorium at 3.00 pm, on Monday 20th June. VGC members are invited to attend. The Club will be represented at the service as a mark of respect to Gwen & the Wilson family.
